BHUBANESWAR, India, June 25, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Founded in 1992-93, Odisha-based KISS Deemed to be University will hold its first convocation for visiting students on June 27, 2021. The ceremony will take place in a hybrid fashion – both physical and virtual – taking into account COVID-19 protocols. 143 students will be awarded diplomas for successfully completing their Masters and Mr. Phil courses. The brightest and most promising graduates will be presented with Founder’s Gold Medals, Chancellor’s Gold Medals and Vice-Chancellor’s Silver Medals at the ceremony.
Focusing on its formula of 3Es – Activate, Educate and Empower, the Kalinga Social Sciences Institute (KISS) is a residential educational institution providing education, accommodation, medical care, vocational training, sports and free arts to 60,000 indigenous children in the eastern state of Odisha, India.
The students come from 62 different tribal communities in the region, 13 of which are Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG). Among them, 30,000 students study on the main campus of Bhubaneswar.
KISS has a strong alumni base of 30,000 autonomous boys and girls and soon over 10,000 students will study at 10 KISS satellite centers across Odisha. KISS has had an indirect impact on over a million tribal children and youth, which in itself is a milestone in the history of tribal children who may emerge from their years of backwardness.

It boosted awareness on the importance of education, girls empowerment, skills enhancement and professional empowerment, entrepreneurship and, in collaboration with tribal communities, KISS has made them true guardians of the ecosystem, of nature and of the achievement of its SDGs.

For its impeccable record, KISS became the first exclusive tribal university in the world to be considered a university in 2017 – a status granted by the Department of Human Resources Development, Government of India. “With its growth, I have always aspired to university status for KISS in order to elevate its credibility as an institution committed to the research of tribal studies by tribal scholars,” said Professor (Dr.) Samanta.
KISS reached a new high when in 2015 it received international recognition and support. Since 2015, UN-ECOSOC has granted it special consultative status.
