Reactions as Zach Ertz writes emotional thank-you letter in Philadelphia

Even in sport, where things change all the time, especially the players and the teams they play in, there are a few visions that are etched in our minds that were hard to understand. One of the most recent is Zach Ertz, the owner of the second-highest-grossing total in Philadelphia Eagles history, a local Bird, who now plays for the Arizona Cardinals.

On October 15, Philly traded the best tight end in franchise history to the Cards for rookie cornerback Tay Gowan and a fifth-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Of course, this is a victory for both sides. Zach Ertz gets some peace and the Birds get a young player they’ve already shown interest in with project compensation. To many this is seen as an easy decision that Philly had to make, but come on.

You know how emotional Howie Roseman and Jeffrey Lurie can be. You know how they attach to certain players. There is no way it could be easy for them. It certainly hasn’t been the easiest transition for Zach Ertz.

Zach Ertz says thank you to the city of Philadelphia in a touching letter.

As everyone on the East Coast got up for another day on Tuesday, they were greeted with a nice surprise if they started the morning by picking up their cell phone or tablet. Zach Ertz wrote a touching farewell letter to the city of Philadelphia.

Always the class actor, whether he’s shedding tears at the NovaCare complex, marking what turned out to be his last touchdown in midnight green in week 6, or just saying goodbye ( for now), Zach Ertz has ALWAYS found a way to make us smile.

His next NFL chapter will be written in Arizona. The idea of him in any other jersey always seems wrong. Earlier we mentioned the legends of the sport who have found themselves in other teams. Think of Patrick Ewing in that Seattle Supersonics jersey (yes, youngsters, the NBA had a professional franchise in Seattle), Michael Jordan in the Washington Wizards set, and although he played for the enemy, Emmitt Smith, in that same Arizona Cardinals jersey.

There are so many more names that could be added to this list, but you get the idea. Ertz’s transition feels like one of those moments. We will miss him, but we understand. It’s part of the game, and eventually, if you play long enough, this stuff happens to everyone.

Zach Ertz will return someday, to retire as an Eagle (as it should be) and someday take his place among the other legends of the franchise to take his place in the Eagles Hall of Fame.
